The Body Mass Index (BMI) is an international measure used to calculate whether a person is at an ideal weight. Developed by polymath Lambert Quetelet in the late 19th century, it is an easy and quick method for assessing each person's fat level, and is therefore an international predictor of obesity adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
| BMI (kg/m²) | Classification | Comorbidities Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 18.5 | Underweight | Low (but risk of other clinical conditions) |
| 18.5 to 24.9 | Normal Weight | Average (Reference standard) |
| 25.0 to 29.9 | Overweight | Increased |
| 30.0 to 34.9 | Obesity Class I | Moderate |
| 35.0 to 39.9 | Obesity Class II | Severe |
| Greater than 40.0 | Obesity Class III | Very Severe |
Although BMI is an excellent population screening tool, it has limitations at the individual level that must be considered:
Always consult a doctor or nutritionist for a complete assessment including bioimpedance or skinfolds.
