Understanding Body Mass Index

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is an international measure used to calculate whether a person is at an ideal weight. Developed by polymath Lambert Quetelet in the late 19th century, it is an easy and quick method for assessing each person's fat level, and is therefore an international predictor of obesity adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Official Classification Table (WHO)

BMI (kg/m²) Classification Comorbidities Risk Level
Less than 18.5 Underweight Low (but risk of other clinical conditions)
18.5 to 24.9 Normal Weight Average (Reference standard)
25.0 to 29.9 Overweight Increased
30.0 to 34.9 Obesity Class I Moderate
35.0 to 39.9 Obesity Class II Severe
Greater than 40.0 Obesity Class III Very Severe

Important Method Limitations

Although BMI is an excellent population screening tool, it has limitations at the individual level that must be considered:

  • Muscle Mass: BMI does not distinguish fat from muscle. Athletes can have a high BMI and be extremely healthy.
  • Elderly: Natural loss of muscle and bone mass can mask fat accumulation.
  • Pregnant Women: The calculation does not apply during pregnancy.

Always consult a doctor or nutritionist for a complete assessment including bioimpedance or skinfolds.
