What is Waist-to-Hip Ratio?
WHR is a simple calculation that measures body fat distribution. Unlike BMI, which measures total fat, WHR indicates where fat is stored. Abdominal (visceral) fat is metabolically more active and dangerous than fat on the hips or thighs.
Body Types and Health
- Apple Shape (Android): Fat accumulation at the waist. Associated with higher risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. More common in men.
- Pear Shape (Gynoid): Fat accumulation at the hips and thighs. Although aesthetically bothersome, it presents lower metabolic risk than visceral fat. More common in women.
Reference Table (WHO)

| Low | ≤ 0.90 | ≤ 0.80 |
| Moderate | 0.91 - 0.99 | 0.81 - 0.85 |
| High | ≥ 1.00 | ≥ 0.86 |
