Ideal Body Weight (IBW)

There is no single magic number. Use the main medical formulas to find the statistical reference weight for your height.

IBW formulas depend almost exclusively on height and gender.

Why are there so many formulas?

The concept of "Ideal Body Weight" (IBW) was initially developed to calculate dosages of anesthetic medications, not necessarily for aesthetics. Since there is no universal standard body, doctors have developed different equations over the decades.

Which one should I follow?

  • Devine Formula (1974): It is the most widely used in modern medicine for drug dosages and renal assessments. It is usually the standard.
  • Robinson Formula (1983): Developed to improve the accuracy of the Devine formula for men.
  • BMI Range: For most people seeking general health, the range based on Body Mass Index (BMI) is more realistic and flexible than an "exact number" of IBW.

Note: These formulas do not take into account body composition (muscle vs fat) or bone structure. An athlete may weigh much more than their calculated "Ideal Weight" and be extremely healthy.
